Odds and Ends

Things come and go so quickly this time of year. There were several wines that I intended to comment on that sold out before I had to chance to sit down and organize my notes.

Here are a few selections that are worth seeking out and there’s still a little quantity left.

OTP Russian River Chardonnay 2006:

We taste through hundreds of wines every week looking for new little gems to bring to the market. Many times, only one out of hundred will get through. Trust me; there is a lot of bad wine out there! But occasionally, someone just drops a gift in our lap and such is the case with the OTP Chardonnay and the next wine too, for that matter. OTP, or Of The Place, is a deliciously fresh offering showing bright green apple and pear notes, with uncommon minerality and just the right touch of toasty oak. The fruit here comes from a source that we aren’t allowed to name, but it’s very famous and under the estates namesake label, this would run you at least double. Only 300 cases produced and we got nearly half of them. $26.99/ On Sale through December at $24.99

Knights Valley Winery Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2006:

This is another one that we didn’t have to work for and one that comes from a VERY exclusive Knight’s Valley property. This is simply juice that didn’t make the cut for the grand vin, but at $100 less than the big dog this will more than do! This is rich, supple and elegant with ripe fruit flavors of strawberry, red and black cherry, tea leaf, a touch of smoke and ultra fine, well integrated tannins. We are swimming in really good Pinot right now, but none better for the tariff than this. Only 50 cases available $44.99

Peirson-Meyer:

From the creators of L'Angevin Wines, we introduce a new companion label Peirson Meyer, named after the two families of L'Angevin. Who are they you ask? L'Angevin began as a joint venture between Alan Peirson and Robbie Meyer who met at Peter Michael Winery where Robbie was the enologist and assistant winemaker, and Alan was the estate/project manager. The concept behind these wines is to seek out mature vineyards in cool climates and combine them with diligent vineyard care and classical winemaking techniques.

Untitled Chardonnay Sonoma County 2006 – They named this ‘Untitled’ Chardonnay because when Parker reviewed the wine, it hadn’t been named yet and he called it “yet to be named” Chardonnay. This is a demonstration of artful blending rather than showing off a single site with fruit coming from Charles Heintz, Laughlin Family and “other” Russian River Valley growers. It is barrel fermented and aged (50% new) and bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is beautifully integrated and showing baked apple, red apple peel, brioche, almond and vanilla notes and finishes like the Energizer Bunny! Fantastic stuff! 150 cases produced $79.99

Oh yeah, Parker was enthusiastic about the wine too, giving it 94 points.

Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2005 – This is the inaugural vintage of their Cabernet with the fruit coming off the Versant Vineyard up on Pritchard Hill. This was treated with all the usual bells and whistles you expect from a $90 Napa Valley Cabernet: hand-harvested, hand-sorted, 25 day maceration, barrel aged for 20 months (70% new), unfined and unfiltered. When I tasted the wine, it had been decanted in the morning and had about 6 hours of air on it. I don’t know if that’s the golden ticket, but the wine was DELICIOUS! It served up classic aromas and flavors of blackberry, cherry, currant and anise with hints of cocoa and vanilla beans. It is well structured despite the lush nature of the fruit. This is really good stuff right now and I suspect that it will only get better over the next 7-10 years. $89.99
